Start with application compatibility

Choose Windows when your application explicitly needs Windows Server, a Windows desktop environment or a Windows-only dependency. Choose Linux when your software stack supports it and you want a Linux package ecosystem, SSH administration or a Linux container host. A familiar desktop is convenient, but it should not override the application’s supported operating systems.

SSH and RDP solve different problems

Linux servers are commonly administered through SSH. Windows servers can provide a graphical Remote Desktop connection as well as command-line administration. Compare more than the base monthly price

• Operating-system and application licensing, where required.
• RAM used by the OS before your application starts.
• Backups, monitoring and restoration work.
• Any management service or extra IP resources you select.

Size from measurements

For an existing workload, record peak memory usage, CPU usage, storage growth and concurrent users. Reserve headroom for updates and growth. For a new workload, use a test environment and measure before committing to a large configuration. No fixed RAM tier can guarantee an arbitrary number of users.

Plan the migration

Switching operating systems is usually an application migration, not an in-place toggle. Check database formats, file paths, scheduled tasks and backup compatibility. Keep the old service available until the new service has passed your own acceptance tests. Compare the RDP hosting range if your main requirement is a persistent remote Windows workspace rather than a Linux application server.
